Types of careers

Career opportunities across our transport and warehouse operations span far and wide. Both in terms of location and types of job. Some roles are more general leadership and management positions, from Driver and Warehouse Operative Team Leaders, to Shift, Warehouse Operations and Distribution General Managers. Some are more specialist, and could include focusing on overall operational efficiency, or transport operations, risk or transport compliance management. With a fleet as large as ours, we also recruit Vehicle Maintenance Managers and Team Leaders to ensure our LGV and other vehicles are running smoothly and safely.

Birtley National Transport Support team


The National Transport Support team at Birtley design, implement and produce the transport management information we need to improve our performance, efficiency and cost effectiveness. The team also get involved in mid and long-term operational and budget forecasting and transport modelling. Career development here is possible – and encouraged. So whilst most of your time will be spent at the Birtley depot, you’ll get to visit various sites, gain exposure to senior managers and shape your role as you progress.

Training and development

You don’t have to look far across our Distribution Centres to see career progression in action. We’re always looking to develop the expertise and careers of our current and future leaders. In fact, we even have an initiative called ‘Rising Star’ that’s designed for managers to spot people’s talent and leadership potential. They’re then supported and encouraged to progress. Lots of colleagues here have a success story to tell, where they’ve joined in one role and risen through, or across, our ranks.

That said, each and every one of those people has worked hard to drive their own careers. Yes, the opportunities are there.
