Awards & achievements

Wherever we work, we try hard to make a positive contribution to our members, our communities and our environment. We do some truly amazing things, and though we do not set out to gain recognition, it is always nice when we do.

All our businesses, from travel and pharmacy to motor services and food, have won awards for their work. Head Office is no exception.

One of the world’s most ethical companies

The Co-operative Group has been recognised as one of the ’World’s Most Ethical Companies’ on an international list compiled by the US based think-tank, Ethisphere Institute. Out of 4,000 businesses considered, just 110 from 22 countries were included in the final list. Furthermore, The Co-operative is the only UK food retailer to be given this accolade, and one of only four food retailers in the world.

UK’s most ethical brand

The Co-operative was voted the UK’s most ethical brand in a GfK NOP poll for The Financial Times, in 2008 and 2009. 

Seafood Champion Award

We were named as one of only five worldwide recipients of a prestigious Seafood Champion Award for 2010.The awards were presented by Seafood Choices, an initiative of international ocean conservation organisation SeaWeb, and recognised individuals and businesses for ’outstanding leadership in promoting environmentally responsible seafood’.

Responsible Retailer of the Year

We collected this award for the fourth year running in the prestigious Oracle Retail Week Awards 2011, which recognises the very best in UK retailing.

Corporate National Partnership of the Year

Our partnership with the hearing loss charity RNID was recognised at the Charity Times Awards 2010.

Company Secretarial Team of the Year

Our hard work and professionalism led to this ICSA award in 2010.

Best large employer for people with Learning Disabilities

The Co-operative received this award from Enable Scotland, in recognition both of our approach to recruitment and training, as well as the willingness of our staff to welcome new employees who have learning disabilities.

Gold Honours for our 2010 Annual Report

Our annual report scooped a Gold Honours award at this year’s ARC Awards, an international competition honouring outstanding achievement.

Orange Leader of the Year (National Business Awards)

In November 2009, our CEO Peter Marks - was recognised at the awards ceremony for his outstanding achievements and demonstration of exceptional business acumen and vision.

Business Initiative of the Year Award (The Grocer Gold awards)

Launched in 2009, The Co-operative Group’s Media Website enables third parties such as brand owners and manufacturers to communicate with Co-operative customers, members and staff through a range of media channels. 

Big Tick Awards (Business in the Community Awards 2008)

The Co-operative Group was awarded Man Group International Climate Change Award and BUPA Healthy Communities Award (supported by the Department of Health).

Gold Award for our PR team

In the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Pride awards North West 2007, our PR team was awarded gold for ‘Outstanding In-House team’ and for ‘Corporate and Social Responsibility’ for its 'Too Young to Die' driving campaign.

Gold rating for equality & diversity for women

In May 2007, The Co-operative Group’s commitment to helping women realise their full potential in the business was given a Gold rating by Opportunity Now, an organisation that promotes equality and diversity in the workplace.

Queens Award for Enterprise

In 2007, The Co-operative became the first retailer to win this for Sustainable development.
