We are a multi-million pound business, with a complex portfolio of activities. Add to this continued steady growth and our unique ethical focus and you will realise why Finance is so critical and so stimulating and varied in its scope.
Comprising specialists, accountants and a support team from a range of backgrounds, our Finance Team works alongside Senior Management within The Co-operative Head Office in each business. This ensures a strong control environment and a cohesive, disciplined approach to MI, budget design and accounting.
Whichever job vacancy you successfully apply for, your personal, management and professional development will be continuously encouraged.
Teams within Finance comprise:
Acquisitions & Disposals
As we continue to grow and expand, we are becoming more active in corporate finance activity, buying new businesses, selling others and entering joint ventures. As the Group’s centre of expertise, our job is to give best practice advice and take the lead in transactions to ensure we take advantage of market opportunities. We work through a growing network of buyers, sellers and intermediaries.
Group Financial and Corporate Accounts
The sheer diversity of our businesses and the technical demands of reporting make group finance a truly stimulating place to broaden your skills and grow your career. Our key responsibilities include reporting consolidated Group results on a monthly basis, producing statutory accounts and managing all central costs within a strong control environment.
Helping to determine the Group’s financial strategy and policy, we are involved with organising funding, controlling risk and making sure we have the finance to meet our many and complex obligations.
Ensuring compliance and providing a tax advisory service to all parts of the business, our work ranges from answering day-to-day queries on income tax, to advising on major projects such as business acquisitions, property disposals or financing structures. There are opportunities to specialise in both direct and indirect taxation.
Working closely with teams throughtout the business, we manage all the Group’s insurance requirements, including a large Self Insurance Fund.
Acting as an ‘internal business advisor’ to all the Group’s businesses, our work includes: process reviews and control assessments; risk mitigation IT reviews; project and developments; forensics problem resolution; fraud prevention, detection and investigation; corporate governance; and compliance.
Financial Shared Service Centre
With two locations – Manchester and Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent - the Shared Financial Service Centres (SFSC) oversee The Co-operative’s transactional activities – including supplier payments, credit, cash delivery and collection, query resolution and financial control. Widely regarded as the ‘engine room’ of our finance department, we offer an excellent platform for skills and career development.
Strategic Planning & Change
Supporting the Board and senior management of The Co-operative as a whole, we bring a professional financial perspective to the preparation and delivery of robust strategic plans by adding value and driving the business towards performance targets.
We work with senior management teams in the businesses to help them plan effectively for the future. Providing best practice advice and professional expertise, we deliver:
- Annual strategic planning framework and business plan guidelines
- Business portfolio reviews
- Quarterly reviews
- Acquisitions and disposals support e.g. business cases, project management
Networking extensively with contacts and colleagues throughout the industry and beyond, this team researches and monitors what’s happening in our markets, in order to gather information which senior management will use in their decision-making. This might be providing an intelligence briefing about developments in the food industry, delivering a report which assesses new market opportunities, or researching social and economic trends to help with future planning.
We are a large business, with an on-going need for material and equipment, and Procurement makes sure we get the best value. This does not include anything we will sell on (so no food items), but it covers everything from tables and chairs to laptops and Blackberries. We also support major strategic projects by finding the best value suppliers, so our work helps to realise significant cost savings for the whole Group.
